Redknapp chooses Defoe before "Rafa"

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has hit back at Rafael van der Vaart's constant moaning about being played out of position and said it is the Dutchman's inability to defend which causes him to be substituted early in games.

The Holland international, 28, complained earlier this week about the work he had to do while playing on the wing during the 2-1 victory over Arsenal at the weekend.

His favoured position is in the hole behind the strikers, but Redknapp has made it clear that Jermain Defoe is the form man in that role, despite Van der Vaart scoring in the win.

The former Real Madrid star, who favours playing centrally, said after the victory on the north London derby: "It's not something I'm very angry about but have a minor irritation with. You want to play in your preferred position, where you can play to the best of your ability". The Dutchman's comments will alert Europe’s elite who have monitored his form over the past 18 months. AC Milan are among his admirers.
